Turkansa Island Outdoor Museum
At the Turkansaari Outdoor Museum, life is as it was in the old days - both everyday and festive. In the buildings and courtyards on the islands of the Oulu River, you can learn about the region's livelihoods and the traditional skills and beliefs of its people.
Come and enjoy the authentic rural atmosphere and natural beauty.
In the buildings and courtyards on the Oulu River islands, you can learn about traditional folk skills and beliefs, as well as the region's industries: agriculture, salmon fishing, tar burning, smelting and tanning. In the Ylikärpäntalo farmhouse, the atmosphere is that of early 20th century peasant life, while in the Parttuainen forest hut you can step back in time to the post-war era and the everyday life of smokers. The island is full of stories worth remembering.
The summer on Turkansa Island also includes a number of events. Each year, there is a Midsummer Festival, a traditional weekend in July, and the Kids in the Museum Days, which are held throughout the summer.
There are excellent cycling routes from the centre of Oulu to Turkansaari, with plenty to see and do. The distance from the city centre is 16 kilometres. Driving to the museum is easy and there is plenty of space in the large parking lots.
